Here's a sampling of some older jupiterman stuff, from back when I didn't really know what I was doing. Be warned: quality levels are dangerously low.
Metroid Stuff
For my independent study in college (that would be May 2003), I spent three weeks making a six track
alternate soundtrack for the Super NES game, Super Metroid. I didn't really know what I was doing, but I got exclusive use of the school's studio for three weeks straight. I really don't like these anymore. Compositionally, they're all kind of crap. Listening to it again for the first time in years, I kind of like Rock and Fire and Legacy of Ghosts the best.
This stuff is from 2004 or earlier. Some of it is good, some of it... not so much. You'll know what to avoid by reading
the description of each song.
Mysticism - 2001 - One of the best of my old pieces. A very
relaxing ambient piece using only two different instruments
(bells and strings)and a huge reverb effect layered over the
whole thing. Started and finished in three days December 2001. I'm still impressed with the melody.
Sun Face - 2002 - I made this for Allison, my girl, for Valentine's day not long
after we got together. I started it knowing it had to have the following elements:
it had to have some symphonic or classical-ish sound (which became the piano
part), it had to be upbeat, and it had to be dancable. Considering my lack of skill at the time, I think I pretty well succeeded.
Grazelands - 2003 - I started this one because, though fond I was of Jeremy Soule's
music, I got kind of sick of listening to the same six songs over and over again
in Morrowind. So I tried to make something of my own. I had big plans involving an entire album of ambient music for Morrowind, but it became one of the classic barely-started, unfinished projects. Regardless, this song has the distinction of being almost the only piece I've ever done that came out exactly as I envisioned it.
Silver Robot Monkey Dance - 2003 - Containing approximately 1 million dance
music clichés, this is a goofy dance song I made in one day. I thought it was pretty awesome at the time.
Shadow of the Mountain - 2003 - Another song I did for Morrowind. I think the name describes it well. The
mountain in question is somewhat menacing, although the song isn't.
Night - 2004 - It's nighttime. This ambient song almost gets creepy but never
quite crosses that line, as Allison pointed out to me.
Coast - 2004 - I honestly don't have much to say about this one.
This and Night were done around the same time in early 2004. Others
have pointed out that it sounds a lot like William Orbit. Whoops!
Boiling Point - 2004 - I made this mostly by randomly throwing weird
sounding crap together. The result didn't come out very well.
I love all the individual elements but they just didn't form a
cohesive ambient piece. I still have fun listening to it though.
Many parts are my voice put through some wacky filters. This
thing also inadvertently spawned the scariest thing ever.
Fog - 2004 - This was an ambient piece that was going
nowhere until Allison suggested adding the drum part, which
happens to be entirely synthesised. I was meant for the
ambient album project, but its a little too creepy to
listen to when, say reading a nice book or concentrating
on work. Vocoders are fun, by the way.
